Tooth Extractions at Safety Bay Dental

Safety Bay Dental Care Centre Dental Tooth Extractions

Extractions are often considered the last resort. Dr Adrian Longworth from Safety Bay Dental Centre is quite experienced, with 40 years in the profession.

Dramatic tooth extractions are definitely a thing to be avoided. Our dentists have a good feel as to whether a tooth will come out easily or not.

So if our dentist tells you that you would be better to seek a specialist dedicated to this type of work, you should know that they are saying so for your benefit. If the extraction is likely to be straight forward we will take it out for you, if that is the agreed best treatment for you.

In extreme pain emergency, we may feel we need to take your tooth no matter how concerned we are about complexity. Each case is different so trust our dentists will discuss the pros and cons and advise you as to the most sensible path when you present for a consult or emergency assessment.

Tooth Extractions Treatment Considerations

Consideration What Our Dentist May Assess How It May Affect Treatment
Diagnostic Factors We’ll look at how badly the tooth is damaged, whether there is infection, the condition of the gums and bone, the position of the tooth and roots, and what we can see on your X-rays. This helps us determine whether the tooth can still be saved and, if extraction is needed, whether it is likely to be straightforward or more complex.
Urgency We’ll check for severe pain, swelling, infection, trauma or a tooth that cannot be stabilised. Some situations need prompt treatment, especially where pain or infection is involved. In other cases, there may be time to discuss the available treatment options first.
Tooth Restorability We’ll assess how much healthy tooth remains and whether treatments such as a filling, crown or root canal could reasonably help retain the tooth. If the tooth can be restored, we can discuss options such as a filling or repair, dental crown or root canal treatment. If it cannot be predictably restored, extraction may be the more appropriate option.
Appointment Sequence We’ll review the tooth, take X-rays where needed and determine whether the extraction can be completed at the practice or whether referral is appropriate. Treatment may involve the extraction itself followed by healing and, where relevant, a later discussion about replacing the missing tooth.
Cost Variables Costs can vary depending on whether the extraction is simple or surgical, the position and shape of the roots, imaging requirements and whether specialist care is needed. We can explain the cost of the extraction separately from any future tooth-replacement options so you can understand each stage of treatment.
